  • For unemployment questions, calculate the unemployment rate = (unemployed / labour force) × 100%. The labour force includes only those actively seeking work, not the entire population.

Solution: Step 1: GDP = C + I + G + (X - M)

Key insight: Net exports can be negative (trade deficit). Don’t forget to subtract imports from exports.

Key insight: CPI in the base year is always 100. The inflation rate measures the percentage change in CPI, not the absolute change.

  • Confusing fiscal and monetary policy: fiscal = government (taxes/spending), monetary = central bank (interest rates/money supply). Students often swap their roles. The HKMA conducts monetary policy; the government conducts fiscal policy.
