Section titled “Key Terms”- Subsistence agriculture: Farming practiced primarily to provide food for the farmer and their family, with minimal surplus for sale or trade. Characterised by low input, low output, and labour-intensive methods.
- Commercial agriculture: Farming conducted primarily for sale and profit, using higher inputs (machinery, fertilisers, irrigation) and producing larger quantities for domestic and export markets.
- Intensive agriculture: Farming that maximises output per unit of land through high inputs of labour, capital, or technology (e.g., high-yielding crop varieties, irrigation, chemical inputs).
- Extensive agriculture: Farming that uses relatively large areas of land per unit of output, with low labour inputs and low yields per hectare.
- Rice paddy (wet rice cultivation): A system of rice growing in flooded fields (paddies), requiring flat terrain, controlled water levels, and warm temperatures throughout the growing season.
- Food security: A condition in which all people have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food at all times to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
- Urban agriculture: The cultivation of food within and around urban areas, including rooftop gardens, community farms, and aquaponic systems.
Agricultural Systems
Section titled “Agricultural Systems”Subsistence vs Commercial Agriculture
Section titled “Subsistence vs Commercial Agriculture”Subsistence agriculture is farming practiced primarily to provide food for the farmer and family, with minimal surplus for sale, characterised by low inputs, low outputs, and labour-intensive methods. Commercial agriculture is conducted primarily for sale and profit, using higher inputs of machinery, fertilisers, and irrigation, producing larger quantities for domestic and export markets.

Most farmers in Southeast Asia practice a mixture of subsistence and commercial farming. The Green Revolution (from the 1960s) promoted the adoption of high-yielding varieties (HYVs), chemical fertilisers, and irrigation, transforming much subsistence agriculture into semi-commercial or fully commercial systems.
Von Thunen’s Model of Agricultural Location
Section titled “Von Thunen’s Model of Agricultural Location”Johann Heinrich von Thunen (1826) proposed a model of agricultural land use based on distance from a central market, assuming a flat, featureless plain with uniform soil and climate. The model predicts concentric rings of agricultural activity: dairying and intensive horticulture nearest the market (perishable, high-value products), then forest (bulky firewood and building materials), then grain farming (lower transport costs per unit value), and finally livestock ranching at the periphery (extensive land use requiring large areas).
Land rent at any point is determined by:
Crops that are bulky, heavy, or perishable have steeper transport cost gradients and are located closer to the market.
Rice Cultivation in Southeast Asia
Section titled “Rice Cultivation in Southeast Asia”Rice cultivation requires specific environmental conditions: minimum temperatures of during the growing season (optimal at to ), minimum of rainfall (most paddies require to annually), standing water (5-10 cm depth) throughout most of the growing period, flat terrain for field levelling, alluvial soils with high clay content, and labour-intensive management at all stages.
The Green Revolution and Rice
Section titled “The Green Revolution and Rice”The Green Revolution transformed rice cultivation in Southeast Asia through high-yielding varieties (HYVs) developed at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines (IR8, released in 1966, doubled yields), irrigation infrastructure enabling double and triple cropping, chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and mechanisation including tractors and combine harvesters.
Consequences of the Green Revolution
Section titled “Consequences of the Green Revolution”The Green Revolution produced dramatic increases in rice production and reduced food insecurity in South and Southeast Asia. However, it also generated increased inequality (larger farmers could afford HYV inputs while smaller farmers could not), environmental degradation (chemical runoff, soil degradation, biodiversity loss), displacement of traditional rice varieties, and groundwater depletion from water-intensive systems.
Agricultural Change in the Pearl River Delta

Section titled “Historical Context”The Pearl River Delta in Guangdong Province was historically one of China’s most productive agricultural regions, known as the “Land of Fish and Rice.” Wet rice cultivation, fish ponds, and sugar cane production dominated the landscape.
Urbanisation and Industrialisation
Section titled “Urbanisation and Industrialisation”Since the economic reforms of 1978, the Pearl River Delta has undergone one of the most rapid agricultural-to-industrial transitions in history. Vast areas of rice paddies and vegetable gardens have been converted to factories, roads, and housing. Agriculture’s share of GDP in Guangdong Province has declined from approximately 30% in 1978 to below 5% recently, while rural workers have moved to urban factories or service industries, making the Pearl River Delta home to tens of millions of migrant workers. Some agricultural land is held by farmers in anticipation of future development, leading to underutilisation.
Remaining Agriculture
Section titled “Remaining Agriculture”Despite urbanisation, some agriculture persists in the Pearl River Delta:
- High-value horticulture: Flowers, vegetables, and fruits for urban markets.
- Aquaculture: Fish, shrimp, and shellfish farming in coastal and inland ponds. The Pearl River Delta is one of China’s largest aquaculture regions.
- Organic and niche farming: Some farms have pivoted to organic produce, agritourism, and specialty products for the growing urban middle class.
Food Security in Hong Kong
Section titled “Food Security in Hong Kong”The Food Import Dependency
Section titled “The Food Import Dependency”Hong Kong imports approximately 90% of its food supply, making it one of the most food-import-dependent territories in the world. This creates significant vulnerability to supply chain disruption (e.g., border closures during the COVID-19 pandemic), price volatility, and quality control challenges across complex international supply chains.
Food Sources
Section titled “Food Sources”Mainland China provides approximately 90% of fresh vegetables, live poultry, and live fish, plus significant quantities of meat and rice. Southeast Asia supplies rice (Thailand, Vietnam) and seafood. Australia, New Zealand, and other developed countries provide meat, dairy, and winter vegetables. Global markets supply fruits, processed foods, and specialty items.
Strategies to Enhance Food Security
Section titled “Strategies to Enhance Food Security”Strategies include the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department supporting local farmers through subsidies and technical advice, the New Agricultural Policy (2016) promoting modernised farming in the New Territories, limited strategic rice stockpiling, diversification of supply sources, and cross-boundary food safety cooperation with mainland China.
Urban Agriculture
Section titled “Urban Agriculture”Urban agriculture has gained attention for enhancing food security, reducing food miles, and improving urban green spaces. Types in Hong Kong include rooftop farms on public housing estates, community farms in the New Territories, indoor and vertical farming using hydroponic or aeroponic systems (producing year-round with minimal water, though energy costs are high), and aquaponics integrating fish farming with plant cultivation. Challenges include extremely high land costs, regulatory barriers, the fact that urban agriculture can only meet a tiny fraction of food demand, and limited public knowledge despite growing interest.
Fisheries in the South China Sea
Section titled “Fisheries in the South China Sea”The South China Sea supports over 3,000 fish species and is one of the world’s most productive fisheries. Coral reefs provide critical nursery habitat. Methods range from traditional artisanal fishing to large-scale commercial trawling.
Threats to Fisheries
Section titled “Threats to Fisheries”Fisheries face overfishing (many stocks depleted, bottom trawling destroying seabed habitats), territorial disputes (China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei claim overlapping portions), environmental degradation (coral reef destruction and pollution), and climate change (ocean warming and acidification affecting reef health and fish distribution).
Hong Kong’s Fishing Industry
Section titled “Hong Kong’s Fishing Industry”Hong Kong’s fishing industry has declined significantly since the 1970s-1980s due to overfishing, pollution, and urban encroachment. Mariculture in sheltered bays produces fish in floating cages, limited by water quality, disease, and typhoon damage. Fishing and mariculture now contribute less than 0.1% of GDP and support approximately 10,000 workers.

Section titled “Intuition”Agriculture is the original human technology — the first time we stopped chasing food and started making it. The Green Revolution was like upgrading from a hand tool to a power drill: same job, dramatically more output. But intensive farming is a bargain with the soil — you get more crops now but deplete the nutrients that will grow crops later. Urban agriculture is the surprise return of farming to the city, like rooftop gardens and vertical farms that bring the countryside to the skyline. The South China Sea fisheries show what happens when a shared resource has no shared management — everyone takes as much as they can, and the fish disappear.
Exam Tips
Section titled “Exam Tips”Distinguish agricultural systems: When comparing subsistence and commercial farming, use specific examples (e.g., shifting cultivation in Borneo versus rice paddy farming in the Mekong Delta) and reference specific inputs, outputs, and environmental conditions.
Use the von Thunen model critically: The model assumes a simplified world without transport infrastructure, climate variation, or government policy. Apply it to real-world examples while noting its limitations.
Reference specific case studies: For the Pearl River Delta, mention specific cities (Shenzhen, Guangzhou) and the scale of land conversion. For rice cultivation, cite specific yield data or mention IR8 and the IRRI.
Address food security holistically: Food security encompasses availability (is food produced?), access (can people afford it?), utilisation (is it nutritious?), and stability (is supply reliable?). Discuss all four dimensions.
Evaluate urban agriculture realistically: While urban agriculture has symbolic and educational value, acknowledge that it cannot significantly contribute to Hong Kong’s food supply at current scales. Its value lies in awareness, community building, and marginal supply diversification.

Common Mistakes
Section titled “Common Mistakes”Confusing subsistence with commercial agriculture based on crop type alone: Both can grow rice. The difference is purpose (feeding family vs selling) and scale (small vs large), not just what’s grown.
Assuming the Green Revolution was purely beneficial: It increased yields but also caused inequality (small farmers couldn’t afford inputs), environmental damage (chemical runoff), and loss of traditional varieties.
Mixing up food security with food self-sufficiency: Hong Kong imports 90% of its food but is food secure because it can afford to buy what it needs. Food self-sufficiency means producing your own food, which is different from having access to food.
